AI Can Imitate Thought, but It Cannot Be Alive

Intelligence is not only information processing. Our bodies, senses, relationships and physical limits shape how we think and what gives life meaning.

Melanie Challenger's Guardian essay asks us to reconsider a very old assumption: that the mind is the important part of us and the body is merely a container. In an age of artificial intelligence, that assumption has become unusually powerful. A system can generate convincing language without a body, so it is tempting to treat intelligence as information alone.

Challenger argues that this misses something fundamental. Human thought does not float above physical life. It is shaped by perception, bodily states, energy, movement, relationships and the constant work of staying alive.

We are not minds carrying bodies

The essay draws on research in biology, cognitive science and neuroscience to show how deeply thinking is grounded in the body. Feelings from the heart, gut, lungs and other systems influence attention and decision-making before conscious reasoning has finished explaining what is happening.

This does not mean every bodily feeling is correct or that evidence no longer matters. It means that judgement is produced by a complete living system, not by an isolated calculation. Experience is physical, social and situated.

AI models work differently. They can identify patterns in enormous amounts of information and produce language that resembles understanding. They do not have a vulnerable body to protect, relationships they depend on or a life that can be lost. Their output can be useful without being the same kind of intelligence that a living person has.

Why this matters for everyday work

Modern work often encourages us to behave as if the body were inconvenient. We sit for long periods, move from video call to video call and remain reachable after the working day should have ended. AI can intensify this if every saved minute is immediately filled with more output.

The Guardian essay connects this body-denying attitude with burnout, physical inactivity and loneliness. I think that connection deserves attention. Productivity is not simply the number of tasks completed. A working life has to remain compatible with sleep, movement, relationships, health and the feeling that your time belongs partly to you.

What the body contributes to a decision

When I coach someone through a career decision, the conversation is not only about a spreadsheet of advantages and disadvantages. We also notice energy. Which option creates curiosity? Which one produces a familiar tension? Where does the person sound more alive, and where do they become smaller?

These signals are not final answers. They are information. They can reveal a conflict between what looks impressive and what feels sustainable, or between external approval and an internal sense of direction.

A practical pause can be valuable before asking AI for more analysis. Take a walk without headphones. Sleep on the decision. Have a conversation in the same room as another person. Notice whether your breathing changes when you describe each option. Then return to the facts with a wider picture of what matters.

Using AI without shrinking life

I am not against AI. I use it and teach people how to use it practically. My concern is the role we assign to it. AI can help organise information, rehearse a conversation or expose gaps in a plan. It should support our participation in life rather than replace it.

A good AI workflow should eventually send you back into the world. It should help you call the person, test the service, ask the better question, create the first version or make time for something important. If the tool keeps you sitting, refining and postponing contact with reality, it may be solving the wrong problem.

My take

The essay is a useful counterweight to exaggerated claims about machines becoming human. AI can be impressive without being alive. Humans can be imperfect without being obsolete.

Our physical limits are not evidence that we have failed to become efficient machines. They are part of what makes care, risk, love, courage and meaning possible. That is worth remembering when technology asks us to measure ourselves only by speed.
